Question: What is a flame detector?

Answer:

A flame detector is a device that uses optical sensors to detect flames. Flame detectors see the optical output from an open flame.

Question: Why use a flame detector?

Answer:

  • Ability to detect flames through smoke, dust and steam
  • Unaffected by wind or draughts.
  • They can detect flames from 25m away (Class 1 performance as in EN54-10).

Question: How does a flame detector work?

Answer:

  • The optical sensors within the detector receive IR radiation emitted by the flames.
  • The processor within the detector analyses the optical sensor signal waveforms and determines if they are flame like and if so accepts them. If the signals do not match the internal algorithms for flames then they are considered to be false sources and rejected.

Question: What types of flames can Talentum flame detectors see?

Answer:

Our flame detectors can see almost all types of flames not just hydrocarbon flames like most competitors.

Question: Where are flame detectors normally used?

Answer:

Typical applications include:

  • Aircraft Hangars
  • Engine Rooms
  • Engine Test Facilities
  • Generators
  • High Voltage Equipment
  • Nuclear Sites
  • Power Plants
  • Storage Tanks
  • Tunnels

Question: How should flame detectors be mounted?

Answer:

We recommend the use of our 2-axis stainless steel adjustable mounting bracket (Part No. 007127) . For more information please see our
accessories page.

Question: Can Talentum flame detectors be used outside?

Answer:

Yes. However we do recommend the use of UV/IR2 and IR3 flame detectors positioned to avoid direct sunlight. It is preferable to mount the detectors using a stainless steel adjustable mountable bracket and weather shield. For more information please see our
accessories page.

Question: Will your flame detectors respond to arc welding and / or lightning?

Answer:

No. Unlike many other UV detection systems on the market, Talentum flame detectors are immune to false sources such as lightning or arc welding and will only trigger when a flickering flame is present.

Question: How should I test my flame detectors?

Answer:

The majority of Talentum detectors can be instructed to perform a self-test. This is achieved by applying 24Vdc to the detector, causing internal LEDS to flicker in the field of view of the detector, thus simulating the behaviour of flames. We also provide a range of real and simulated test devices. For more information please see our
testing products page.

Question: Are Talentum products certified and approved?

Answer:

For a full list of approvals please see our certifications page.
